Power producer PT Indonesia Power (IP), a subsidiary of state-owned electricity firm, had on February 19-20 conducted a trial of co-firing refused derived fuel (RDF) with coal at the PLTU Jeranjang coal-fired power plant in Lombok Barat, West Nusa Tenggara Province, substituting part of the coal requirement with renewables.
IP said in a statement that the results of the co-firing trial were quite positive with most of the operating and emission parameters of the power plant were within safe level.
IP said that through the co-firing method, part of coal used to fuel the power plant was substituted with RDF pellet, processed from city waste. The company said that such co-firing method is the first to be implemented in Indonesia, although such method has been implemented in coal-fired power plants in Europe and the US.
IP said that this is part of efforts to help reduce the country’s dependency on coal to produce electricity.
Coal is the dominant fuel of power plants in the country. As per end 2017, total power plant installed capacity in the country stood at 60.78 GW, of which 58.3 percent are fueled by coal, an energy commodity which will eventually deplete in the future.
