The Legok Nangka waste-to-energy project in West Java has reached commercial close, marking a key milestone for what is set to become Indonesia's first waste-to-energy public-private partnership (PPP) project.
The project will provide final treatment and processing of municipal solid waste from six municipalities in the Greater Bandung area.
The Global Infrastructure Facility (GIF) said it had supported project preparation since 2019 through a US$1.1 million assistance program. The support was carried out alongside the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), working with Indonesia's Ministry of Finance and the West Java Regional Waste Management Agency.

A consortium led by Japan's Sumitomo Corporation, together with Hitachi Zosen Corporation and PT Energia Prima Nusantara of the Astra Group, was selected as the project developer.
The consortium has finalized a power purchase agreement with state-owned utility PT PLN (Persero), paving the way for project implementation following financial and contractual completion.
The Legok Nangka facility is expected to process municipal waste from Bandung City, Cimahi City, Bandung Regency, West Bandung Regency, Sumedang Regency and Garut Regency, while generating electricity from waste treatment operations.
