Singapore-based shipbuilder PaxOcean has started construction of a new split hopper barge for US gold mining firm Newmont Corporation at its Batam shipyard, marking the fifth vessel order from the mining company.

PaxOcean said the keel laying ceremony for Hull G8066, a 975-cubic meter split hopper barge, was recently held at its Batam yard in Indonesia.

The company said the repeat order reflected the long-term partnership between PaxOcean and Newmont, supported by years of collaboration and vessel deliveries for offshore and marine operations.

PaxOcean said it has delivered a range of specialized vessels over the years for offshore and marine sector clients, including assets designed for demanding operational conditions.

Split hopper barges are commonly used in dredging and offshore support activities, particularly for transporting and disposing of dredged materials in marine operations.

PaxOcean said construction of the vessel is ongoing and the company aims to deliver the barge according to schedule.
