The exploration and production unit of the state oil and gas firm Pertamina in Sangatta, East Kalimantan, has decided to develop new oil wells in the area and the Bunyu Island in a bid to boost profit, according to the unit general manager Chairul Huseiny.

Chairul said Friday that the unit had conducted surveys over the past few years.

He said that the Sangatta and the Bunyu Island was the unit's most productive oil production areas in the East Kalimantan province. The Sangatta unit has three production areas including another one in the Tanjung area.

Chairul said that the Sangatta unit currently produces 5,000 barrel of oil per day.

"We'll increase this by finding new wells," he said.

He declined to provide further details on the unit's targets in 2000.(*)
