State-owned electricity firm PT PLN started on Thursday electricity supply for state-owned oil and gas firm PT Pertamina’s Refinery Unit II in Dumai, Riau Province.

Pertamina said in a statement obtained Friday that the power supply follows a MoU signed in August of last year by the two companies.

The statement said that in the initial phase, PLN supplies 5,540 kVA of electricity via 20 kV medium voltage power network to the refinery. The power supply will increase going forward as it would also cover supplies for offices within the Pertamina Refinery Unit II complex.

Pertamina said that the power supply from PLN will reduce operation cost of the Pertamina Refinery Unit II by up to 25 percent, and will reduce the refinery’s consumption of diesel fuel used in the past to produce own power supply.

It added that the PLN power supply will allow Pertamina to focus on its core fuel oil refining business.

The Pertamina Refinery Unit II supplies about 20 percent of the country’s fuel products requirement.
