State-owned coal miner PT Bukit Asam Tbk (IDX: PTBA) said it has received a government-backed assignment from state utility PT PLN to supply additional coal for delivery in July, following the utility's move to bolster fuel inventories for coal-fired power plants in Java.
PTBA confirmed on Friday that it had received a letter from PLN requesting additional coal supplies for PLN's own generating units and independent power producers (IPPs).
"PT Bukit Asam has indeed received an assignment letter from PT PLN regarding additional coal supply to meet the needs of PLN Group and IPP power plants in the July 2026 period," PTBA Corporate Secretary Division Head Eko Prayitno told Petromindo.com.
He declined to disclose the additional volume allocated to PTBA but said the company was ready to fulfil the assignment.
"The company follows the provisions stated in the assignment and adjusts it to operational readiness and commitment to fulfil existing contracts," Eko said, adding that PTBA would ensure deliveries were made on schedule to support the reliability of Indonesia's power system.
PLN said on Thursday it had secured an additional 1.8 million metric tons of medium- and high-calorific-value coal for July under a special government allocation, with a further 3 million tons per month to be supplied from August through December.
The utility said the additional fuel would help raise dependable generating capacity on the Java grid by about 5 gigawatts, following recent electricity supply constraints linked to shortages of higher-quality coal.
PLN has said the additional allocation was arranged by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources after domestic production shifted increasingly toward lower-calorific-value coal, reducing supplies suitable for some power stations.
PTBA targets domestic coal sales of 17 million metric tons under Indonesia's Domestic Market Obligation (DMO) scheme in 2026. As of May, the company had supplied 8.1 million tons, or about 48% of its annual target.
Under its approved 2026 mining work plan, PTBA aims to produce about 50 million metric tons of coal this year.
