Thai energy firm Gulf Energy Development Public Company Limited  has revealed plans to invest THB 60 billion (USD 1.8 billion) in the expansion of the Map Ta Phut LNG terminal in Rayong province, Thailand. The investment was approved by Gulf MTP LNG Terminal Co., a joint venture between Gulf Energy (70%) and PTT Tank Terminal (30%), marking a significant step in meeting the growing demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Thailand.

The expansion project, expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2025, aims to increase the country’s LNG import capacity, with operations slated to begin in the first quarter of 2029. This move will significantly enhance Thailand’s energy infrastructure, supporting both industrial and power generation needs. The terminal will be the third LNG facility in the country, complementing those operated by PTT.

The project aligns with Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) development plan, which seeks to improve energy security and infrastructure efficiency. Gulf Energy, which holds a license to import up to 7.8 million tonnes per annum of LNG, will use the terminal to supply fuel to its power plants, including Gulf PD, Gulf SRC, and Hin Kong.

The expansion will be completed in two phases: the first phase will focus on land reclamation and infrastructure development, while the second phase will involve constructing the LNG terminal and regasification facilities. The project remains subject to regulatory approvals and market conditions.
