IDX-listed PT Semen Gresik Tbk, one of the country?s major cement producers, plans to develop a limestone mine on a 450-hectare area in Rembang regency, Central Java .

Semen Gresik?s President Director Dwi Sucipto said that the development of the Rembang limestone mine would be part of the expansion of the cement producer?s limestone production.

But, he said that the company would need to apply a forest-lease permit from the Forestry Ministry because the mine area was located in a forest area owned by state forestry company Perum Perhutani.

Dwi said that the new mining area would increase the size of the company?s limestone mine in forest areas to about 1,000 hectares. Previously Semen Gresik secured a permit to open a limestone mine in forest areas of about 532 hectares. The company has also operated about 2,000 hectares of limestone mines in non-forest areas.
